Hi, I have a mac mini mid 2011 with a 2,3 GHz Intel Core i5 and 4GB RAM. Now and then I run heavy programs such as Photoshop and After Effects, but is not my regular job, I only do it for assignments from college, so maybe I do heavy tasks one or twice per month. The rest of my use is Safari, Pages, iTunes, Garageband, and some light programming with Python and HTML/CSS/JS web design.

I am about to upgrade RAM, and I know the rule of 'buy as much as you can afford', but I am seriously wondering whether I am going to feel the difference between 8 and 16GB if most of my work is not that heavy anyways. Is there a point on installing 16GB if I am not doing any monster sized task? All the media I play goes through iTunes directly to the apple tv, so I don't really use the computer to play mkv. I might convert flac to alac using xld and from time to time use handbrake. The real important task will be when I replace the HD for an SSD drive, but that will have to wait until holidays when I have spare time. For the moment, I just want a quick upgrade.
